JEE Mains 2021 Result: How to Solve?
If two students get the same marks in JEE Main Result 2021, then NTA follows certain factors as tie-breakers and calculates the final rank on the basis of them.
The JEE Main tie-breakers for Paper 1 (BE/BTech) are in order:
Step 1: Those who get more marks in maths will get better rank even if their total marks are same.
Step 2: The student securing more marks in Physics will get higher rank.
Step 3: The student securing more marks in Chemistry will get higher rank.
Step 4: The student who has less negative responses will rank higher.
Here are the JEE Main tie-breakers, in the order they are followed for Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning):
Step 1: Those who get more marks in maths will get better rank even if their total marks are same.
Step 2: The student scoring more in the Aptitude Test will get a higher rank.
Step 3: The student scoring more in the drawing test will get a higher rank.
Step 4: The student who has less negative responses will rank higher.
JEE Main Result 2021: How percentile is calculated?
JEE Mains 2021 result takes into account the percentile and not the total marks obtained by the students.
Students are awarded percentage marks on the basis of their performance in comparison to other students appearing for JEE Main.
Each JEE Main session will get different percentile marks. Those high scorers get 100 percentile marks. The marks are then normalized for the other students.
Here is the generalization formula for NTA:
(100 x No. of candidates whose raw score is equal to or less than the candidate in the particular JEE Main session) / Total no. of candidates in the particular JEE Main session

For top colleges in India, JEE Main scorecard is now important for admission purposes.
This is because due to the cancellation of the Covid-19 pandemic and the upcoming board exams, the top engineering colleges are not looking at the board exam marks for making the merit list.
JEE Mains 2021 Result: How are percentile and normalization different?
The percentile score is calculated by comparing the raw scores of different candidates with each other.
Then the percentage of candidates is normalized throughout the session. Normalization of marks is done to compare the marks of the candidates in the examinations which are conducted in multiple sessions. Large education tests conducted in India also use this method.
The percentile score will be the normalized score for the exam (instead of the candidate's raw marks) and will be used to prepare the merit list. The percentile score will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid bunching effect and reduce ties.
JEE Main Result 2021: Qualifying cut-off vs Entrance cut-off
There are two types of cut-off marks in the result of JEE Main.
JEE Main qualifying cut-off is the minimum marks that students will need to qualify for JEE Advanced.
JEE Main entrance cut-off will be released by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) in the form of opening and closing ranks for each institute after the JEE Advanced results are out.
JEE Advanced 2021 to allow candidates of JEE Main 2020 and 2021
Even though JEE Advanced usually allows only those candidates who have cleared JEE in the same year.
The main qualifiers of both 2020 and 2021 will be able to appear for the same.
This is because the Covid-19 pandemic which was rampant in 2020 prevented many JEE Main 2020 qualifiers from appearing for JEE Advanced 2020.
What to check in JEE Scorecard
Candidates must check their name, roll number, personal details and marks calculation.
This year JEE Main scorecard is important because engineering colleges are not looking at class 12 board exam marks for their merit list.
In case of any error, students should report it to NTA as soon as possible.
Note that the NTA website does not hold the JEE Main result for more than 90 days. Once you are able to view it, you should download JEE result and keep a print out of it.
In March, former Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had announced new criteria for BArch admission this year.
“In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the admission eligibility for BArch degree courses for the academic session 2021-2022 has been relaxed. Minimum 50% requirement in PCM and 10+2 aggregate in class 12 with 10+3 Diploma with only PCM subjects/Mathematics exempted,” Pokhriyal had tweeted.
What after JEE Main?
If you haven't got a good score in JEE Main, don't worry. Many engineering colleges like NITs, GFTIs, IIITs, state level engineering colleges and many private engineering colleges take admission on the basis of JEE Main score. You can apply for admission in those colleges or try your luck again next year.
Note that due to COVID-19 circumstances, the criterion of minimum 75% marks in class 12 board exam for admission to NITs and CFTIs has been done away with and admission will be based on JEE Main 2020 marks only.
You may also find that your JEE Main January score is better than your JEE Main September score, in that case you can proceed for admission on the basis of your JEE Main January scores.
